1880 Morgan Silver Dollar

The 1880-O Morgan Dollar (Buy on eBay) represented the second year of production for the new silver dollar at the New Orleans Mint. The mintage level almost doubled from the prior year, however examples in higher uncirculated grades still carry a premium.

2. The 1880 Morgan Silver Dollar was produced in four mints: Carson City, New Orleans, Philadelphia, and San Francisco. The most valuable 1880 Morgan Silver Dollar carries the 'CC' mintmark used by the Carson City Mint. It always carries a premium value because of very low production, making it the rarest 1880 Morgan Dollar.

1880-O is a fairly common Morgan dollar until you start looking for one in gem BU. The typical 80-O is well-struck, but has lots of marks on the surface and muddy luster, making cherrypicking quality important. In MS65, the population is actually significantly lower than it is for 1879-CC. Prooflike coins can be found, but tend not to have deep mirrors. A normal oval O and a micro O were both used as mint marks, with slightly more oval O dies having been made. Variety collectors will find that there are many 8/7 overdates of varying strength. There is the strong VAMs 4 and 5, the VAM 6 with a spiked 8, which when paired with a prominent reverse die gouge of VAM 48 is the scarce VAM 49, and several 'checkmark' varieties that show only a trace of the 7 on the 8. VAM 43 is also sought after as a scarce doubled ear, doubled reverse, O/O variety in the Top 100 list.

The 1880-S Morgan Dollar (Buy on eBay) is one of the most available coins of the series in terms of acquiring a higher grade, attractive coin. Most are encountered with excellent strikes and frosty luster. This coin is similar to the 1881-S Morgan Dollar, for which pristine examples are readily available.

1880 Morgan Silver Dollars

The mintage of the 1880-S Morgan Dollar was 8,900,000. A great portion of this amount was held in Treasury vaults and eventually released decades later in the 1950’s and 1960’s, creating a plentiful supply of mint state coins.
